Do I Really Need a Savior?

A lot of pain and suffering in the world has come about in the name of religion.  The church today is just another business, trying to gain wealth, power, and success.  People would be better off taking care of each other rather than worrying about religion.  And who needs a god anyway, since it is well known that we evolved from monkeys, and the universe came about on its own with a Big Bang without any help from a god.

Yes!  God is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe.

Today's world would have us believe that there is no need for God, and no need for a Savior like Jesus Christ.

They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised.

Romans 1:25

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

John 1:1-4

How many stumbling blocks, obstacles, rationalizations, reasons, and excuses will the world conjure up for not believing in God?  In Jesus' day, as it is in some parts of the world today, belief in Jesus could lead to physical persecution and death.  More commonly today, however, are intellectual and social obstacles toward us developing a simple faith in Jesus.  All angles are attacked:  The church and clergy are portrayed as corrupt.  Believers in Christ are thought of a fools and hypocrites.  The Bible's account of Creation is attacked with every new "missing link" in evolution and new theory about the forming of the universe receiving front page attention by the press (and the rebuttal and eventual disproving of these theories receiving no attention by the press).  Jesus himself is discredited in modern day literature, which is portrayed as fact by the media rather than the fiction that it is.  Attempts are made at the legislative level to remove any mention of God from all governmental areas, as if the government needed to be  protected from religion rather than the other way around.  Where will it all end?

Actually, the theme of individuals and society abandoning belief in God for there own personal beliefs is a recurring theme in the Bible.  In Paul's letter to the developing Roman church, the progressive decline in a society that does not believe in God is vividly described.  What was true then is true today.  Please take the time to read Romans 1:18-32 here, and see if it does not describe today's society, even though this was written almost 2000 years ago:

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.  They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Why does belief in God and Jesus receive such negative publicity, while a belief in evolution and a permissive Godless society receive such positive publicity today?  Because belief in God and Jesus makes us look at ourselves as the sinners that we all are (all Christians included), and belief in Jesus leads us to change our sinful ways.  Only through the saving power of Jesus Christ can we even begin to become right in God's eyes.  After we first turn to Jesus as our personal Savior, our eyes will be opened to the lies and deceptions that the world and society has been bombarding us with, and we will be given the strength to resist them.
