Do I Really Need a Savior?

Life is tough: working two jobs, supporting and trying to raise a family, keeping a healthy relationship with my wife, working out at the gym three days a week, taking care of my disabled parents, paying bills, and on and on.  My life is balanced so precisely that if one little thing goes wrong, everything falls apart.  I am usually running late for everything I do, and I catch up at night and may be a little short on sleep.

I probably need a Savior, but I need to wait until I get my life in order before I make a commitment like that.

Yes!  Don't procrastinate; Jesus brings peace to our lives.

Sometimes we are so busy that it seems that if we add one more thing to our lives that everything will fall apart.  There is no peace, only constant turmoil.  Life seems to be about dealing with the next crisis that comes up, and there is no sense of order or stability.  How does belief in Jesus fit into this chaos, and how we can find time for church attendance and activities, Bible study, and for donating our time in service to God?

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
          - Isaiah 53:5

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
          - John 16:33

In life we have to set priorities, and the Bible says that we are to put Jesus first, even above ourselves, our spouse, and our family.

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple." - Luke 14:26-27

In this verse, "hate" is translated from the Greek word miseo, which means, in this context, "to love less."  Thus, a Christian puts Christ first in his life, even above himself and his family.  Will belief in Christ make our lives easy and orderly?  Unfortunately not, as it is stated in John 16:33 above.  But we will have peace.  Christ has overcome the world on our behalf.

In accepting Christ as our personal Savior, we are making a commitment to make Jesus the Lord of our lives.  This is what it means in to carry our own cross.  Being in step with God, by accepting Jesus as our Savior, brings blessings to our lives.  While these blessings may not be materialistic things which we desire, they are spiritual blessings which have eternal significance.

There is no reason to "wait until I get my life in order" before accepting Jesus as our personal Savior.  Jesus accepts us as we are, and in following Him, our priorities will be set.
