Do I Really Need a Savior?

I have made my life on my own, with no help from anyone.  I worked myself through college and medical school, and started my own practice without relying on anyone.  I believe that to be successful and to have fulfillment in life, you have to trust yourself and not rely on a crutch.

Do I need a Savior?  Doesn't the Bible say, "God helps those who help themselves?"

Yes!  Jesus has done the work so we don't have to.

Is Jesus Christ really crutch for weak people?  In reality, Christ is not merely a crutch to support the difficult times during life; He IS our life!

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned."
          - John 15:5-6

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
          - Galatians 2:20

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
          - Philippians 1:21

The commonly quoted phrase, "God helps those who help themselves" is not from the Bible, and in fact the Bible teaches the opposite.  (See the Phantom Verses Devotional for more.) The Bible teaches that we are to humble ourselves, and to put our faith in Jesus and not in ourselves.

This concept is difficult for people in today's society to understand.  The modern emphasis is on getting ahead, the "American Dream", making more money, buying bigger and more expensive toys, getting more power and an advancing career, etc.  The modern emphasis is not on reliance on others, but on self-reliance and self-improvement.  The modern emphasis is on being served, not serving others.

Not much has changed in the 2000 years since Christ's ministry on Earth.  The people in that day had the same issues, and in general were not looking for a Savior that would suffer and die for them, but for a Savior that would establish an earthly kingdom for them.

The problem is that eventually everyone will die, and no amount of earthly wealth or power will get a person into Heaven.  Only accepting Jesus Christ as Savior will accomplish that.  However, once a person accepts Jesus as Savior, that person will change to become more and more like Jesus, as in the Bible verses above.  The importance and priority of earthly wealth and power will decrease, true fulfillment in life will come from serving and worshipping God.
