The next example of perception vs. reality illustrates
the fragile nature of our perception in discerning reality. While this
takes some concentration, maintain an intent focus on the dot in the center of
this image for 20 - 30 seconds, without blinking or looking away.
As we stare at the central dot, the surrounding gray
circle disappears into the background, often leaving only the central dot
visible. However, if we blink or temporarily look away, the gray circle
reappears. Our perception is that the gray circle disappeared, but in
reality it never changed, only our perception did.
The point is that we really cannot
trust our perception based on our senses as to the reality of what is around us.
By faith we know that the gray circle never really disappeared.
"Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror;
then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully,
even as I am fully known." - 1 Corinthians 13:12
