Seniors Ministry of Cool Spring Church

The Seniors Ministry at Cool Spring includes all of the opportunities and activities offered through the Adult Ministry, as well as special fellowship opportunities geared toward those 55 and older.

This includes activities from lunches to overnight trips - SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! Activities have included a Blue Ridge Mountain Leaf Tour, Bean & Cornbread Luncheon, Christmas Dinner Party, Pot Luck Luncheons, Sunday Brunch Buffet, and more.  Review the listing below of planned activities, as well as past activities, some with photos.

  • Hanover Tavern & Court House Tour
    Lunch at Hanover Tavern
    Thursday, March 8
    10:00 am - 1:30 pm

    Sign up for our guided tour to hear stories about Hanover Tavern's past and its famous guests, while experiencing the completely restored architecture of the building. We'll visit the historical Hanover Courthouse where Patrick Henry practiced law and argued the famous Parson's Cause. The Hanover Courthouse is the third oldest courthouse still in use in the US. Following our tour, we'll have lunch at Hanover Tavern & Pub. Sign up, pay $20 and make your lunch selection (available at the Rec Center) by February 29. If you have a credit on file, please indicate when you sign up for this trip that you want to use your credit.
     
  • United States Capitol Tour
    Lunch at Chadwick's in Old Town Alexandria
    Monday, March 26
    7:30 am - 5:00 pm
    Cost: $48

    Get on board a chartered motor coach to the United States Capitol in Washington, DC. The tour will begin at the Visitor Center with its soaring spaces and skylight view of the Capitol dome. We'll watch the film "Out of Many - One" which illustrates how this country established a new form of government. Through our tour guide and various exhibits, we will learn about how Congress works and also how the magnificent Capitol building was constructed. Time will be allotted to visit the house gallery and the Capitol Gift Shop before heading to Chadwick's in Old Town Alexandra for lunch. Sign up, make your lunch selection (available in the Rec Center) and pay the $48 cost at the Rec Center by Friday, March 9. This trip is limited to 55 participants.

  • Celebrate the Christmas Season with the Cool Spring Travelers!

    Please join us as we celebrate the Christmas season with good friends.

    Cool Spring Baptist Church Fellowship Hall
    Friday, December 9 at 6:00 pm-$15 per person

    6:00 pm - Appetizers/Social Time
    6:30 pm - Dinner

    The evening will begin with appetizers and a time to fellowship with others. A delicious dinner featuring your choice of crab cakes or pork roast served with green beans, oven-roasted potatoes, pineapple cheese casserole, rolls and assorted desserts will follow.

    After dinner you can sit back and enjoy a mix of bluegrass, old-time, folk and country music performed by Wyatt Allen & Jeslyn Vaughan. Wyatt grew up at Cool Spring and went on to graduate from VCU with a BA in Classical Upright Bass. Jeslyn has a BA in Classical Vocal Performance. Both are members of "Blue Grassers Anonymous" where everyone suffers from the same affliction. At the end of the evening, you will have a chance to win door prizes!
     
  • Cool Spring Travelers January Event

    Beans & Cornbread Southern Pot Luck Luncheon and "Antique Furniture 101"

    Bring your favorite Southern dish for a delicious pot luck luncheon. After lunch we will experience "Antique Furniture 101" with Bill Irvin, an appraiser with Motley's Auction & Realty Group.

    Each participant is invited to bring pictures of one piece of furniture they would like to have appraised. Bill will need a picture with a front, side and back view. Come prepared to ask questions and also share your knowledge.
     
  • Woodrow Wilson Library & Museum

    Please join us for a "charter bus" trip as we explore the Woodrow Wilson Library & Museum and the Presbyterian Manse, President   Wilson's birthplace. Following lunch at Mrs. Rowe's, a restaurant famous for its home cooking and delicious pies, we'll spend some time visiting shops in downtown Staunton. Sign up, make your lunch selection and pay $45 at the Rec Center no later than October 21.
     
  • Jamestown Tour & lunch at Surrey House Restaurant

    Have you been to Jamestown since the 400th anniversary? Did you know that new permanent exhibits and a new introductory film that revitalized the living history areas at Jamestown Settlement are now in place? Come see the story of the people who founded Jamestown and of the Virginia Indians they encountered along the way! After a ferry ride across the James River, we will have lunch at the famous Surrey House Restaurant before heading home along scenic Route 10.

    Surrey House Restaurant lunch selections will come with a beverage and slice of pie.

    "Cooking with Herbs" Demonstration

    Enjoy lunch at Lavender Fields Herb Farm while overlooking a view of the gardens. Our lunch will include white meat chicken salad with a touch of tarragon on a bed of lettuce served with fresh fruit. Side dishes include Sun Chips and Mediterranean Pasta Salad. Try a glass of Lavender Lemonade and your choice of gourmet ice cream with flavor choices such as lavender, honey, mint and many more! A vegetarian option is available. After lunch we will learn about how to use fresh herbs in our cooking to enhance natural and nutritional flavor. A visit to the Herb Shop, a unique garden gift shop that has "All Things Lavender" and much more, will be our last stop of the day. Sign up and pay $20 at the Rec Center by Friday, May 13.   • "Hog Wild" in Smithfield, Virginia

    Go "Hog Wild" on a charter bus trip to Smithfield, Virginia. We'll begin our day with a guided tour of St. Luke's Church, formally known as "Old Brick Church." It is the oldest existing Church of England founded in America, this country's only surviving original brick Gothic church and houses the nation's oldest, intact organ. Enjoy lunch at Smithfield Station overlooking the Pagan River. After lunch we will head to Main Street in Old Smithfield and walk amidst history, seeing places like the Old Courthouse of 1750, Isle of Wight Museum and many antique and specialty shops. Sign up, select your lunch and pay $45 at the Rec Center by Monday, March 21.

  • Exploring Historic Hanover

    Friday, March 18 from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
    Cost: $18 Limited to 22 People

    Join us as we explore historic Hanover County beginning with Rural Plains, the two-story brick home of the Shelton Family where we'll get a sneak peek of the renovations being done to restore this lovely old home to its former glory. Our second stop will be Historic Pole Green Church Foundation, where we can trace the Road to Revolution, hear about Pole Green's Civil War history and view the representational structure created to frame the site of the original building. The final stop will be Salem Presbyterian Church where the ladies of church will serve us Brunswick stew for lunch prior to our tour. You may sign up and pay $18 at the Rec Center by Friday, March 11.

  • Valentine's Day Pot Luck Luncheon

    Join us for a pot luck luncheon to celebrate Valentine's Day. After lunch, sit back, relax and enjoy the music of the Webber Masters Gospel Group from Webber Memorial Baptist Church. The group has performed at the Glen Allen Cultural Arts Center as well as made appearances on the John Trimble Radio Show and Bill Bevins Morning Show. A love gift will be collected for our guests.   • Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Visit & Lunch

    Come enjoy the newly expanded Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. See the beautiful Robins Sculpture Garden and the incredible McGlothlin Wing which added 185,000 square feet to the main gallery. If you enjoyed the VMFA before you will love it even more now.

    After our tour of the galleries, we will have lunch (on your own) in the Best Café before returning to church.

    Make plans to join the Travelers for an evening of good food, fellowship and fun!   • Maymont House Holiday Tour

    Visit Feathernesters in Lakeside and get in the holiday spirit early. The shop will be decorated for the holidays. We'll have lunch in their "Tea Room" where the food is always delicious. After lunch, we'll head to Maymont Park for a special "Maymont House" Holiday Tour. The lavish Victorian tree trimmings and spectacular decorations will bring the wonder of an 1893 Christmas to life. Sign up and pay no later than November 16.
     
  • Montpelier: The Home of James Madison

    Enjoy slides taken by Marsha Dodd & Darlene Payton on their recent trip to Israel. Hear their story of adventure as they traveled throughout the Holy Land and experience their awe at walking where Jesus walked.

    Enjoy a day of Richmond Civil War History with our own personal guide. The first stop will be the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar Iron Works, once the industrial heart of the confederacy. We'll learn about the people and events that impacted Tredegar and the Confederate Capital. After a delicious "all you can eat lunch buffet" at Bottom's Up Pizza, we will visit the Chimborazo Hospital Museum to hear about the famous hospital, other hospitals in Civil War Richmond and the practice of medicine in the 1860's.

  • U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum
    Friday, May 21 - 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
    Cost: $16


    Come and visit the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee. Since 1775, Quartermasters have provided logistical support to the Army. Their stories are told in eleven exhibit galleries that also contain such important artifacts as the Nation's first 50 star flag, General George Patton's World War II jeep, General Eisenhower's field quarters, and General Grant's saddle.

    After a box lunch in the picnic area, we proceeded to the U.S. Army Women's Museum where stories of women's contributions to the Army are told through exhibits from Bunker Hill to a bunker in Iraq.

  • Gettysburg - The High Water Mark
    Friday and Saturday, May 14-15

    Imagine yourself in the midst of 165,000 soldiers on a hot July day in 1863. Stand where General Lee stood as he watched 15,000 of his men march across a mile-wide field towards the center of the Union line on Cemetery Ridge. Imagine the largest battle ever fought on this continent, and its 51,000 casualties.
    Join the Cool Spring Travelers as they tour the Gettysburg National Cemetery where Abraham Lincoln gave the famed Gettysburg Address see the 42 feet high, 377 feet around Cyclorama of the Battle, and the introductory film, A New Birth of Freedom, at the Gettysburg National Military Park Visitors Center or spend a few hours shopping at the Gettysburg Outlet Mall.

    20 seats are reserved for this trip, and reservations (with $75 deposit) are being accepted on a first come, first served basis.

  • Tour/Lunch in Ashland
    Tuesday, March 23

    Come explore Church Quarter, a charming log cabin in western Hanover built around 1843. Its recently restored brick orangery is one of only two such dependencies still surviving in Hanover County. Our next stop will be historic Fork Church that dates back to 1722. After experiencing the church's rich history, we are off to the Iron Horse Restaurant in Ashland for lunch. After lunch, we'll head out with our self-guided walking tour maps to explore Railroad Avenue where you will find lovely old homes, fun shops and historic buildings such as the Ashland Depot and the Henry Clay Inn.

  • Pentagon Tour
    Tuesday, April 13
    Join us for a chartered bus trip to the Pentagon outside of Washington, DC.  
    This hour long walking tour with its 1½ mile route will expose us to the history of all four branches of the military.  We will visit the Memorial placed inside the Pentagon near the 9/11 crash-site and the 9/11 Memorial Chapel.  In the Hall of Heroes, we will get to see the recipient’s names as well as a close look at the actual Medal of Honor.

    After our tour we will proceed to Pentagon City Mall for lunch on your own and shopping before we board the bus for our return trip.  $25 for the tour, and you must sign up and pay by April 2.

    Join us for a delicious brunch to celebrate Valentine's Day. The meal will include sausage & egg casserole, potato casserole, biscuits & gravy, bagels, Danish, fresh fruit plus juice & coffee. After brunch we will start the "Antique Road Show" with Terry Hunter, an appraiser with Motley's Auction & Reality Group. Each participant is invited to bring one "treasure" they would like to have appraised. Come prepared to ask questions and also share your knowledge. The cost is $8.

    Have you ever heard of Hanovertown? Did you know it is located just off Studley Road in Hanover County? Did you know that there was a Pontoon Bridge over the Pamunkey River at Hanovertown at one time and a Ferry at another time? Hear interesting stories like this and much more from Bob Tate, our guest speaker and member of the Hanover Historical Society.

    Following dinner, Delane Martin entertained with her "Cajun Christmas" presentation. Door prizes were given at the end the evening!

  • Heritage Gallery of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society Tour
    Tuesday, November 10
    9:00 am - 3:00 pm
    Limited to 30 participants

    We toured the Heritage Gallery of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society located at the heart of the beautiful campus of the University of Richmond. The story is told in an inviting and informative gallery filled with artifacts, photographs and documents. The walls are covered with 36-panel murals with scenes that depict the struggle to secure religious liberty and other events in the life of Virginia Baptists.

    After lunch in the University of Richmond’s fabulous dining facility, we will stroll by the lake to the Lora Robins Gallery. This natural sciences and decorative art museum, with over 100,000 pieces ranging from Jurassic dinosaur fossils to rare gems and minerals, will dazzle us.

    The cost of this activity is $16 including lunch.  Please sign up and pay at the Rec Center by Monday, November 9th.

  • Monticello - Home of Thomas Jefferson
    Tuesday, October 20 - 8:30-4:00 pm

    Enjoy some autumn memories at Monticello, the extraordinary home of Thomas Jefferson built overlooking Charlottesville. The visit includes a 30-minute guided tour and plenty of time to explore the grounds and the new Visitor Center. Box lunches will be provided by Café Monticello. The second stop will at the Carter Mountain Orchard "Apple Barn." Sign up and pay the $26 cost and make your lunch selection by Monday, October 12.

  • Historic Petersburg Tour

    Meet at church

    Explore Historic Petersburg starting with a guided tour of Blandford Church known for its beautiful Tiffany stained-glass windows. The tour takes us into Blandford Cemetery, one of the oldest and largest in America. After lunch at Maria’s Café and Italian Restaurant in Old Town Petersburg we will visit the Centre Hill Mansion, an opulent Petersburg residence built in 1823 often described as a symbol of the grandeur of the nineteenth century Virginia aristocracy. During the guided tour we will learn the Mansion’s history, including its role during the Civil War and visits by two presidents.

  • Senior Travelers Trip
    Saturday, June 6
    D-Day 65th Anniversary

    Join friends of the Virginia War Memorial to travel by motor coach to Bedford, Virginia for the commemoration of the 65th Anniversary of the historic D-Day landing on the shores of Normandy, France. We will have reserved seating for the official ceremony 11:00 am. The cost is $35 per person for transportation. The deadline to sign up is April 30. We'll leave from the Virginia War Memorial located at 621 S Belvidere Street in Richmond at 6:30 am and return at 6:30 pm. You may bring a small cooler for your food and drinks. Food and drinks will be available to purchase at the National D-Day Memorial.
     
  • A Fredericksburg Adventure: Tour Historic Belmont Estate

    Our day will start at Belmont Estate the 18th century Georgian home of artist Gari Melcher and his wife Corinne. The tour will include a 12-minute introductory film and then a guided tour through the beautifully furnished main house and art studios. There will be time to explore the restored gardens and grounds as well as the gift shop. We then head to Brock's Riverside Grill for a delicious lunch served overlooking the Rappahannock River. We will end the day wandering the antique shops and boutiques of Old Town Fredericksburg. The cost is $26 and is limited to 43.

  • Ladies Tea

    At the Home of Penny Mize

    All ladies in the Senior Travelers Group are invited to a "Tea Party" which includes a selection of fine teas, assorted sandwiches, mini ham biscuits and scones with Devonshire cream and lemon curd, all served on fine china and crystal. Pastries including pound cake, cream puffs and fudge bars will be served for dessert.

    The special guest will be our Cool Spring author, Jill Baughan, who will share from her book entitled "Born to Be Wild." Plan to attend this ladies tea and learn to discover the freedom of fun! The cost is $16 per person and seating is limited to 36 ladies. Please sign up and pay at the Rec Center by Friday, April 24.

  • St. John's Church & Richmond Canal Cruise
    Tuesday, April 21 from 9:00 AM-3:30 PM

    We're going to visit historic St. John's Church where Patrick Henry gave his famous speech. Discover the rich history of the graveyard and the famous people buried there. After a stop at the Visitors Center to view the permanent exhibition and gift shop, we will precede to Bottom's Up Pizza for a buffet luncheon.

    After lunch we will walk to our private Richmond Historic Canal Cruise where our captain will share tales of the city's waterways and dynamic history. During this hour long journey, we will see unmatched views of Shockoe Bottom and the city's past including the famed "Triple Crossing" - the intersection of three key transportation routes. Space is limited to 35 people.

  • Old Church Historic Tour
    March 12, 2009 - 9:00 am - 3:30 pm

    Sign up now to explore historic Old Church. Immanuel Episcopal Church will be our first stop where Janice Williams, The Mayor of Old Church will share the churches history. We move on to Black Creek Antique & Gift Shop Café where lunch will be served. The cost is $20 per person. You will be responsible for anything you purchase in the gift shop. We finish up the day with two more historic stops. The trip is limited to 20 participants.

    Potluck Luncheon & Speaker

    Did you know that Rural Plains was built in 1725 and is considered the most historically distinguished home in Hanover?   • Cool Spring Travelers Christmas Party
    Our annual Christmas Celebration was on Saturday, December 13th as we welcomed back Homeward Bound, a gospel group with country flair. The $15 dinner menu included gelatin salad, chicken puffs, green beans, sweet potato casserole, rolls and assorted desserts. Door prizes were given out and Santa stopped by for a visit!!

    Thanksgiving at Berkeley Plantation

    Tuesday, November 11, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm
    Meet in the church parking lot. Join us as we go back in time to the first Thanksgiving at Berkeley Plantation. We will start with a guided tour of the house that is furnished with 18th century antiques. the tour includes an audio-visual program and viewing of the museum collection. A walk around the grounds and a visit to the gift shop will conclude our time there.

    Then we are off to Charles city Tavern on Route 5 for a delicious lunch and a look around before heading back. Cost is $27 for the tour and lunch.

    Tour Hollywood Cemetery & Virginia War Memorial

    Monday, October 20
    9:30 AM to 3:00 PM
    We will start the day at Hollywood Cemetery with a movie on the history of the cemetery and the famous people buried there. We will then start our specially guided tour (driving and some walking) to see first hand these sights.

    Market 810, the buffet style student dining hall at VCU, will be our lunch stop. After lunch we will explore the Virginia War Memorial and become acquainted with their educational programs being used in schools across Virginia.

    11:00 AM to 1:30 PM in the Sanctuary & Fellowship Hall
    Come and enjoy a musical concert in the Sanctuary by The AMEN Choir. The choir is from Lakewood Baptist Church in Alabama. After the worship/concert time, the we will adjourn to the Fellowship Hall to enjoy lunch. Chicken will be provided. We ask that everyone bring a covered dish to share (salad, vegetable or dessert.) The AMEN Choir will be our guest for lunch.

    Spend the morning touring the area on your own using the free trolley service. Available destinations include Yorktown National Battlefield Visitor Center, Waterman's Museum, Yorktown Victory Center and more. Enjoy lunch at the Carrot Tree Restaurant & hear our guest speaker, author Kathleen Manley, who will share from her book "The History of Yorktown and Its Victory Celebrations."

    Historical monuments from the past and present preserve history and time with their greatness. Washington's skyline is remarkable to the say the least, and with its newest memorial, the World War II Memorial, it is that much more impressive.

    "Cool Spring Travelers Valentine Brunch"

    Thursday, February 14
    11:00 am in the Fellowship Hall
    Brunch included egg casserole, Belgian waffles, sausage & gravy, biscuits, sweet rolls, fruit & beverages. Trip Chalkley, newly elected Hanover Commonwealth's Attorney, was our special guest. He shared with us the changes he plans to make in the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
     
  • Cool Spring Travelers January 2008 Event
    "Bean & Cornbread Lunch"

    Tues, Jan 8 at noon for a Bean & Cornbread Lunch in the Fellowship Hall. Our special guest was Dr. Robert Bluford, Jr., a member of the Hanover County Historical Committee. Dr. Bluford is the director of the "Historic Pole Green Church" project on Rural Point Road. He talked about the memorial and their new plans for the area. Donations for the Pole Green Church project were taken at the luncheon and presented to Dr. Bluford.

    This was a fun- filled "Old Time Christmas" celebration with special entertainment by "Homeward Bound," a gospel trio with a country touch. We enjoyed a dinner of cranberry chicken, red skin potatoes, green beans, homemade rolls and a variety of desserts.

    Friday, November 16 from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm at Shady Grove Church.
    Menu included chicken/gravy, green beans, stuffing and dessert. Entertainment and door prizes. Cost: $6 per person.

    "Tour the State Capital & Executive Mansion"

    Tuesday, October 23 from 10:00 am - 2:30 pm.
    We toured the Executive Mansion at 11 am and then had lunch in the new Capitol Extension with Delegate Frank Hargrove as our guest. Following lunch, we toured the renovated Capitol and returned to church at approximately 2:30 pm.
