"Thinking Like a Christian - Part I" - From TV news to the Internet to the classroom, secular ideas are presented as “the way to think” – sophisticated and scientific, contemporary and aware. We have been taught to think in bits and pieces instead of looking at things in totality. Join us for this six-week “no homework” study.

“Precept Upon Precept: Kinsman Redeemer: A Study of the Book of Ruth” - If you were a slave, who would buy your freedom? If you had an enemy, who would come to your defense? In the Old Testament, this buyer-defender, known as a “kinsman-redeemer” was usually a close relative. If you’re a believer, you already have one—Jesus Christ! This rich study shows how Jesus both bought us (redeemer) and advocates (defends) for us, offering us an opportunity to rebuild our broken lives. “Walking by Faith: Lessons Learned in the Dark” -
Although the author, Jennifer Rothschild is physically blind, God has taught her to see that living a life based on faith rather than sight, requires us to look at “our” situations through a lens that filters out what is seen and focuses on what is unseen. Learn to live out your faith by taking risks, giving God control, persevering through hardships, being guided by the truth rather than influenced by feelings, and seeking God rather than seeking deliverance from difficulty. This 7-week study is limited to 12 participants.

Adult Ministry

The Adult Ministry: Cool Spring's ministry for adults involves the development of our personal relationship with Christ through:
  • Regular Worship
  • Regular Bible study
  • Christian fellowship
  • Involvement in Service to the church and Stewardship
  • Discovery and application of our spiritual gifts

Worship: Opportunities for Worship are available every Sunday morning at 8:30, 10:00, and 11:15. The 8:30 and 10:00 Worship Services are more contemporary services, with a praise band leading the worship. The 1115 Worship Service is a blended service, with a choir. However, there is overlap between the two worship styles, and while the 11:15 service is more traditional, it is still informal.

There are also frequent worship and praise events throughout the year, including Christmas musicals, Christmas Eve Services, and Easter musicals. Childcare and a nursery are routinely available for young children during special performances, thus facilitating the ability for adults with children to attend.

Bible Study: There are two times available for Bible study on Sunday mornings for church members and visitors, 8:30 and 10:00. There is a class for everyone, and visitors are encouraged to explore different classes to find the one best for them. Most classes have frequent social events for fellowship. The classes available are listed on this page. New classes are often added as well.

"Discipleship Development" Classes are held throughout the year, often seasonally. These are more focused studies on a particular theme or aspect of the Bible in application to our lives. These usually meet on Sundays or Wednesdays.

Christian Fellowship: Cool Spring has frequent churchwide activities, such as picnics, game nights, and other social events to facilitate fellowship. Sunday School classes often have a regular social schedule as well. In addition, there are groups in which fellowship is a major part of their missions, such as Promise Keepers for men, WMU for women, and prayer groups.

Go to Opportunities for Fellowship for more information.

Service and Stewardship: God wants us to be active and involved in our church. Through service to the church and community (missions) we strengthen our relationship with Christ and further the Word of God. There are many opportunities for service at Cool Spring, both in regularly scheduled activities as well as special events. Different groups at Cool Spring help minister to different local communities in need, such as Essex Village and Barrett Learning Center. Members at Cool Spring have participated in Habitat for Humanity Construction locally as well as church building in third world countries. For examples of some service opportunities within the church, see the Volunteer Opportunities and Spiritual Gifts Page.

Spiritual Gifts: Many individuals would like to be active in the church, but do not know where they fit in, or what is available for them to do. The Bible states that we all have at least one Spiritual Gift, that when combined with our own natural talents, can provide service to the church. Cool Spring has a Spiritual Gifts Assessment that can help determine our Spiritual Gifts, as well as councilors to help us to find out our Gifts can be applied. More information about Spiritual Gifts is on the Volunteer Opportunities and Spiritual Gifts Page

Children's Ministry

The Preschool Ministry: From birth through kindergarten, children are introduced to the Christian faith through age specific hand-on activities and learning experiences. This helps to establish a foundation to be built on in future years.

Preschool Activities are scheduled throughout the year, often corresponding with adult activities, such as Churchwide Picnics. Child care / nursery is usually available for children age 5 and below during seasonal adult activities, such as Christmas and Easter evening performances.

Vacation Bible School (see below) is held each summer, usually in June, for children aged 4 and above.

A Baby Dedication Service in the Spring represents a commitment from the parents of young children to raise them in a Christian home, helping them to grow toward faith in God.

Children's Ministry: For elementary age children, the church is of major importance in providing positive opportunities to learn of Jesus Christ, to study His Word, and to come to a personal knowledge of His redeeming Love. Through caring Christian teachers our elementary age children participate in Bible Study, mission and music groups, Vacation Bible School, fellowships, discipleship groups, and other activities throughout the year. All of these activities provide a foundation of Christian beliefs which will last a lifetime. Regularly scheduled children's activities include:

Child care during the Sunday 8:30 a.m. Worship Service
Children's Sunday School at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m.
Children's Church (for kindergarten age and above) at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday during the 11:15 Worship Service
Children's music and Choir on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
Missions Activities on Wednesdays from 6:15 - 7:30 p.m.
Sunday School Classes for School age children include:
  • First grade children
  • Second grade children
  • Third grade children
  • Fourth grade children
  • Fifth grade children
  • Sixth grade children

G-Force (God’s Force) provides children opportunities to build relationships with Christian adults; be involved in fun, high-energy Bible study experiences; and participate in praise and worship with other children.

What’s involved in G-Force? As soon as the children enter the room, they are involved in interactive activities called Ignition. In Velocity, they move to exciting and fun music to help them learn the main point and memory verse for the session. They also experience the Bible story through drama, props, and other creative methods while building relationships with their captains and friends. In PowerCel, the children and captains transition into small groups for personal application of the main point, the Bible story, and the memory verse. Finally, the children and captains have Re-Entry for an exciting review of what they have learned through out the session.

G-Force is offered at our 8:30 and 10:00 Bible study hours for 1st - 5th graders. At 8:30 all children meet in the New Fellowship Hall. At 10:00, 1st graders meet in room 203, 2nd graders meet in room 200, and 3rd – 5th graders meet in the New Fellowship Hall.

AWANA  Awana is a nondenominational ministry that assists churches in reaching children and teenagers with the gospel of Jesus Christ and training them to serve Him. The heartbeat of Awana is reaching children around the world with the good news that Jesus Christ loves them and can save them from sin. Each week, more than one million boys and girls in over 110 countries attend Awana clubs where they play games, memorize Bible verses and listen to Bible stories. From preschool to high school, children and youth have fun while being taught the Word of God.

The weekly Awana clubs all function basically the same way. A 90-minute to two-hour club session features three segments: Game Time, Handbook Time and Council Time.
During Game Time, boys and girls play games on the unique Awana Game Square.
In Handbook Time, children work through age-appropriate handbooks memorizing Bible verses and doing activities ranging from patriotism to community service. They earn awards based on their work.
The final segment, Council Time, consists of singing, puppets, Bible stories and lessons based on Christian principles.
Besides weekly meetings, other Awana activities occur throughout the year.

Scouting: Cool Spring frequently serves as a meeting place for Cub Scout Pack #521. For, more information on scouting in general, go to the Boy Scouts of America section in the Youth section above.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School is a week long event usually in June of the year, one or two weeks after school lets out for the Summer. This extremely popular weeks exposes children to the Christian faith through music, crafts, games, and fun. There is a specific theme each year, and the children's rooms are decorated to the max. Each year three to four hundred children attend, and generally no one is turned away.  Children age 4 to those entering the 6th grade participate from 9:00 to noon for 5 days.  The families are invited to a performance held on the final Friday evening.

Vacation Bible School SonGames 2004 Information - VBS was a Great Success this year with around 460 children participating and 250 volunteers (average of 222 volunteers per day).  Funds were raised to send 21 children to Mountain Top Children's Camp in Wyoming, and items were collected for the Church Hill Backyard Bible Club.

Vacation Bible School 2003 - "Son Harvest County Fair" - was held from June 23-27, and Cool Spring was blessed with over 430 children in attendance.  Over 250 adult and youth volunteers were actively involved during the week.  The children participated in Bible study based on Galatians 5:22-23, the fruit of the Spirit.  They also enjoyed recreational activities, crafts, singing praises to God, and skits.  The Cool Spring County Fair was held after the Friday evening closing ceremonies.  The monetary offering during the week was used to support missionaries ministering to the Lozi people in Africa, and small toys and other items were collected for the Youth to take to Mexico on their Mission Trip to Reynosa.

Go to Vacation Bible School 2003 - "Son Harvest County Fair" for photos and more information.

Vacation Bible School 2002 - Walkin' by Faith and not by Sight - was a great success. Held from June 24-28, God blessed us with 410 children and taught us lessons in faith along the way. More than 170 youth and adults volunteered during the week to ensure children were cared for and ministered to. Toys and school supplies were collected for Samaritan’s Purse and will be sent in shoeboxes in the fall to destinations around the world. The total offering collected for the week will be given to Hanover Habitat for Humanity.  Children learned through recreation, crafts, refreshments, and music that pointed the way to an "Extreme Adventure with Jesus" that makes a difference in their daily lives.
