PROPAGANDA
VS
TRUTH
For two weeks in August 1936, Adolf Hitler's
Nazi dictatorship camouflaged its racist,
militaristic character while hosting the Summer
Olympics. Minimizing its anti-Semitic agenda and
plans for territorial expansion, the regime
exploited the Olympic Games to impress many
foreign spectators and journalists with an image
of a peaceful, tolerant Germany. Having rejected
a proposed boycott of the 1936 Olympics, the
United States and other western democracies
missed the opportunity to take a stand that
contemporary observers claimed might have
restrained Hitler and bolstered international
resistance to Nazi tyranny. After the Olympics,
Germany's expansionism and the persecution of
Jews and other "enemies of the state"
accelerated, culminating in World War II and the
Holocaust.
Much like the Games of 1936, the world is still
full of false prophets and impressions. The
scripture gives us clear direction in regard to
testing the propaganda of this world, "Beloved,
do not believe every spirit, but test the
spirits, whether they are of God, because many
false prophets have gone out into the world."
(1 John 4:1) I want to encourage you to "test"
the messages and claims of this world. All
around us we are bombarded with various kinds of
propaganda and false doctrine. The problem with
false doctrine is that it inevitably breeds
factions and disrupts the unity and peace for
which Christ suffered and died for. Testing
these claims is part of an evaluation process
that must be done. The Bible, God's written Word
to us, has been given to us so we can understand
and defend truth. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, "All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness,
that the man of God may be found complete,
thoroughly equipped for every good work."
Through a personal relationship with Jesus, we
are given the promise of truth. For Jesus said,
"And you shall
know the truth and the truth shall make you free."
